Borderlands 3 Skill Trees: A complete guide to Zane & the Assassin class

We know you can't wait for September 13 so you can dive into Borderlands 3 as soon as it's released. The game puts you in control of one of four classes, each significantly different from the next.

Zane is one of those four classes — an agent capable of handling the most dangerous situations, always with class and finesse. So, to find out how you can shine with this character, fasten your seatbelts as we take off for Planet Zane!

Zane, the Operative

New to Borderlands 3, Zane is a lonely character. Born into Pandora's famous Flynt family, he's a semi-retired hitman who always has a gadget up his sleeve and dirty work to do. Not one to mix too much with the others, the person he's closest to happens to a holographic clone — of himself. At least he's sure to be understood, despite his unpleasant side...

Zane may be an Operative, but many agree he's the 'assassin' of this latest episode in the Borderlands series.

Zane has the potential to be a very strong support class thanks to the Barrier Action Skill in the Under Cover tree. It helps protect your allies, especially paired with the SNTNL Action Skill in the Hitman tree — which will deploy an automated machine gun and devastating drone. However, if you are looking for a more stealthy approach, you can head into the Doubled Agent tree, which allows Zane to produce a clone that both absorbs and causes damage. Even better — you can switch places with your holographic clone.

Zane — Grenades or double the Action Skills?

Zane can have two Action Skills equipped at the same time. However, this means he cannot use Grenades, so it's up to you to choose — Grenades, or twice as many abilities? This is shown by two hexagonal slots, corresponding to two Action Skills (or an Action Skill and a Grenade mode). Each of these slots has two chevron-shaped slots linked to them, and are used to improve an Action Skill. These must belong to the same tree.
