Assault rifles are designed for medium range combat. The most versatile category it can be useful up close (where it is nevertheless overtaken by shotguns) and from a long distance (where it is overtaken by snipers).

Here is a competitive rifle. More powerful, more accurate, and faster to reload, the SCAR is a superior version of the M16 on almost every point. It is clearly the assault rifle to keep if you only have to bring one. But this rifle only exists in purple and orange, so you won't often get your hands on it.
Scoped
23 of impact damage is far below other assault rifles and even below most pistols. However, the scope assault rifle has... no dispersion, really none. Your ball will always go right into the center of your viewfinder, even if you shoot continuously.
Therefore, it is an excellent option to nibble the lives of opponents spotted from far away, before approaching to finish them. It is a weapon you'll be happy to find if you don't have any snipers.
