As in the main series, there are many attacks in Pokémon GO. How do they work? Which Pokémon learns which attack? We reveal all!

Pokémon GO Moves & Attacks

In Pokémon GO there are many attacks which allow you to inflict damage on the opposing Pokémon in combat, when you face them in a Gym, Raid or Trainer Battle.

However, moves in Pokémon GO are very different to how they work from in other games in the series.

Pokemon GO

However, in the application battles are still at the heart of the Pokémon GO.

Each Pokémon is assigned two random attacks when it is captured or when its egg hatches. These can be changed later through the use of TMs, and new moves will be randomly generated if your Pokémon evolves.

For a varying amount of Stardust (in addition to Candy), you can also teach your Pokémon a new, third attack.

The two attacks chosen for a Pokémon are as follows:

  • A Fast Attack (see list on Page 2) that is drawn from one or two possible attacks, and can be used at will.
  • A Charged Attack (see list on page 3) that is drawn from up to four possible attacks, and that requires you to charge a meter before use.

There are no status effects in Pokémon GO, such as Posion or Paralyze. These are all "standard" attacks, which deal a certain number of hit points in damage.

It should also be noted that STAB (same-type attack bonus) is present in Pokémon GO, and will boost attacks of the same type as the Pokémon by 25%.

For example, an Espeon using a Psychic-type attack will receive the bonus.

In addition, the damage caused by attacks also depends on the type of the defending Pokémon attacked. As in the main series, a super effective attack will do more damage, and less if it is not very effective.
