Pokémon GO: How to catch Mew

Find out how Professor Willow's Research system works, and how to catch the Mythical Pokémon, Mew.

Pokémon GO: How to catch Mew

A feature introduced in April 2018, Research Tasks allow you to earn rewards and catch rare Pokémon — such as the Mythical Pokémon, Mew.

There are two kinds of tasks: Field Research and Special Research. In this guide, we will list all existing Field Research tasks, and detail the Special Research task to unlock Mew.

You will also have the chance to catch a Legendary Pokémon or other rare Pokémon via a Research Breakthrough. You earn this by collecting stamps, given to you for completing Field Research tasks.

Be warned though — you can only collect one stamp per day, meaning it will take seven days for you to be able to collect this reward.

Field Research

You collect Field Research by spinning PokéStops. You will then have to complete tasks, such as catching specific Pokémon, battling in Raids or using items.

If you don't like a task, or find it is too difficult, you can delete it and go to another PokéStop to unlock a new task.

The list of currently available Field Research tasks is below:

  • Catch X Pokémon
  • Catch a X-type Pokémon
  • Catch X Pokémon with Weather Boost
  • Catch a Ditto

Which Pokémon will I get after 7 stamps?

In April 2018, when Field Research was first released, Moltres was the Pokémon available to catch when you completed your seven daily tasks.

However, the Pokémon on offer change frequently, and for the months of May and June, the Legendary Pokémon Lugia, Ho-Oh, Latios and Latias are the reward!

Special Research

The extra-special tasks will be given to you by Professor Willow himself, and they will allow you to make significant discoveries!

When you click on the binoculars icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen, you will find normal Field Research quests. Notice that the "Special" tab allows you to access the Professor's unique tasks.

The first concerns the Mythical Psychic Pokémon, Mew.
